I was just thinking about this when I was writing this little spiel. So as the King said, “Begin at the beginning,” Gen X’ers are referred to at those that were born between the late 1960s to early 1980s. The offspring of the baby boomers and Gen X’ers must resent their upbringing as they are often referred to as the baby busters, as there was a steady decline in the number of births as they grew older. Gen X is also associated with the increase in divorce, political apathy and the birth of computers. While this generation ages though, I’m sure even though they have lived differently then the baby boomers, they will all grow old the same way. Yelling at kids on the lawn, reminiscing back in their day and enjoying boiled sweets.

I am actually on the starting line up of Gen Y being born in the mid 80s with the line being drawn at the late 90s for this exclusive club. Gen Y is synonymous with instant gratification, as we grew up with the internet and had few financial struggles along the way. We grew up with very little memory of wars until the ‘War on Terror’ and as we experience higher costs in education we choose to stay at home a lot longer in to our early 20s. Gen Y is has a remarkable ability to adapt to technology and an off shoot of instant gratification is the way we bounce from job to job jumping our way up the ladder instead of staying put waiting for an opportunity to rise in our existing company.
So what is next for Gen Z? You can assume they are the humans of the new millennia, grow up in the after effects of Sept 11, taking mobile phones and iPods to school and active consumers that have a strong decision on what they parents purchase. But where to from here? What will happen when we run out of letters? Some are already proposing we can these 2000’s Gen V (virtual) or Gen C (consumer). Either way, no matter what letter you choose, when the world we grow up in constantly changes we can expect the values of humanity to change with it.
One can only hope it changes for the better.
