In my debut as an outside linebacker playing Gridiron (American Football), I only had two words going through my head, “outside containment”, over and over. The message has finally stuck and I’m doing well, but it is amazing how this skill can be moved across to other competitive mediums. General multiplayer tactics can be found here and the “Group Kill” tactic can be found here.
The outside contain tactics function is to stop flanking and push the opponent back inside where the rest of the group can crash down on the enemy. This can work remarkably well in Halo 3 on several maps.
Let’s first take for example the Narrows map. Its 3v3 and you have the Red team crashing up the middle. By the Blue term having outside containment they can stop the assault from swinging around, they force the Red team to have to communicate which is the primary target, Blue term can close in on the assault and the Red term is prone to grenade splash damage.
As mentioned before in the previous “Group Kill Tactic”, outside containment can be maximised by attacking in a V formation and once engadged the leader dropping back to draw the enemy closer to your two supports and then close in on the enemy from both sides. Set trapping also another option, whether you have a player sitting back and two supports on either side. The centre can then lure players through the middle with supports crashing in on the sides or behind. The supports also act as scouts if the opposing team decides to attack from a particular flank.
You should also look to see where the strongest point on the map is. For example on Valhalla, the term that controls the centre usually wins the game. By placing scouts and support forces on the outsides, by the caves or downed pelican, you can report if any enemies are attempting to flank whilst assisting the forces in the centre with fire from your position.
I’ll be posting a few more tactics as it seems quite a few are reading these, if you have any maps or game type you are having trouble with, leave a comment and I’ll address it for you.
