The internet is an amazing thing; it allows amazing people to blossom. Recently I have found myself addicted to the “internet celebrity” genre of books. I can’t get enough of them! The books revolve around your normal, average, 20-30 something year old guy, they get a crazy idea in their head and they run with it. The end tale is so astonishing and entertaining, the publishing come rolling in and overnight they become best sellers.
Below I have listed a few of my favourites that I really encourage to you read. They show when you’re a unique person with a unique idea and have the courage to follow your dreams you can be successful.
Join Me – Danny Wallace
Danny Wallace posts an ad in his local newspaper that says “Join Me – Send 1 passport size photo to XXX”. Danny never tells the people why they are joining and he insists “it’s not a cult, it’s a collective”. He then takes the campaign to new extremes creating a web-site, becoming a celebrity on Danish television and puts a huge amount of strain on his girlfriend.
Dave Gorman’s Google wack Adventure – Dave Gorman
Dave Gorman receives an email from a random Australian informing him that he is a “Google wack”. That is to say that by typing two words in Google, after searching 3 billion websites, his was the only website out of the 3 billion that had those two words. Dave slowly becomes addicted, and after a few drinks and some goading by friends he sets out on an adventure across the globe to find 10 consecutive Google wacks. The coincidences that occur are astounding and it is a really funny read with plenty of dry British humour.
One Red Paperclip – Kyle Macdonald
The game was called ‘Bigger and Better’. High school kids used to walk around the neighbourhood, walking door-to-door to trade small items for things bigger and better. Some kids claim to have traded a toothpick up to a car. Kyle being broke and his relationship with his girlfriend wearing thin after ‘mooching’ for so long sets out for the ultimate game of ‘Bigger and Better’. He lists one red paperclip for trade on craigslist.com and slowly he trades up to a generator, a snowmobile to a van. After a few interviews on CNN and Canadian television he is set the deadline to trade to a house by July 12.
Yes Man – Danny Wallace
Danny is talking the bus home from work when after some idle conversation a man suggests he should “say yes more.” Danny decides to give it a go and slowly it becomes his life. He adopts two Grannies in one day, wins £25,000 pound, then loses £25,000, flies to Malaysia and Australia, and receives a promotion at the BBC. Being a Yes man has never been more fun.
I really encourage you to check them out - these books are a very easy read, with a lot of laughs along the way.
